KETRACO's core business is to plan, design, build, operate and maintain new electricity transmission lines and associated substations that will form the backbone of the National Transmission Grid.
The new and robust power grid will:
- Improve quality and reliability of supply;
- Reduce transmission technical losses;
- Increase access to electricity service countrywide;
- Reduce the cost of electricity to the customer; and
- Provide a link with neighbouring countries.
The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) will retain its current stock of existing 132kV and 220kV transmission lines.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, KETRACO made a donation of Kshs. 180,000/= to Kenya Coconut Development Authority (KCDA) for purchase of 9000 seedlings to be distributed to farmers in the coastal region.

With the seeing is believing spirit, KETRACO sponsored Lions Sightfirst Eye Hospital outreach team to hold a Medical camp at Muthingiini Primary and Secondary Schools in Kibwezi at a cost of Ksh. 100,000.The camp aims at restoring sight to needy children in low income public schools.

KETRACO has signed a multi-billion power transmission contract with Iberdrola Ingenieria y Construccion S.A.U for the construction of the 220/66 kV substations associated to the Nairobi ring transmission project.
