The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) today partnered with Italian Terna group and Centro Elettrotecnico Sperimentale Italiano (CESI) in an initiative that will see the transmission Company’s staff members’ expertise in transmission infrastructure operations and maintenance sharpened.
Through this partnership, funded under the aegis of the Nairobi Ring and Associated substations project, KETRACO’s engineers will be trained locally on maintenance of the Company’s new high voltage electricity transmission lines and substations that form the backbone of the National Transmission Grid for the next thirty six (36) months.
Speaking during the function, KETRACO’s Ag. MD & CEO FCPA Fernandes Barasa thanked the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) for continuing its support to KETRACO in implementing its projects and facilitating capacity building of staff in achieving the Company’s mandate.
“We have completed nine (9) power transmission projects that are strengthening and extending the national power transmission grid that is enhancing quality, reliability and security of electricity supply in the Country in addition to increasing access and reducing cost of supply. Thus, training our engineers in operations and maintenance skills as well as system application and market operations is indispensable.” FCPA Barasa added.
The trainings are being sponsored by AFD at a cost of Euro 2,646,179.50. The financing institution is also financing KETRACO’s 25km 220kV Olkaria – Suswa line.
KETRACO is currently constructing regional power interconnectors that will enhance regional grid inter-connections with Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia.
The occasion was graced by the Italian Ambassador to Kenya, Amb. Mauro Massoni.
