KETRACO today announced the exit of Eng. Joel Kiilu as the Managing Director effective end of this month after serving the company for two terms of three years each. The Board of Directors has named FCPA Fernandes Barasa, the Company’s Chief Manager Financial Services to act as the Board conducts recruitment for the next MD.
In a communication from the Chairman, Dr. Kenneth Sigilai thanked the outgoing MD for his dedicated service to the Company."Eng. Kiilu has built this Company from scratch to where we are today and also undertaken landmark projects in a way we have not done since independence." he said. Dr. Sigilai further added that under the interim leadership of Mr. Barasa, the Company is in solid hands.
For six year, Eng. Kiilu has grown the company from zero worksheet to a current asset worth of Ksh.72 Billion. His achievements include seeing the Company grow from seven staff members to 300. He has also seen the completion of eight transmission lines and 33 ongoing projects valued at over Ksh. 200Billion. This has made towns like Garsen, Lamu, Isiolo and Garissa get connected to the National Grid.
Before joining KETRACO, Eng. Kiilu worked as the Chief Manager, Energy Transmission at Kenya Power. He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor of Science (Bsc.) degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nairobi. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Leadership degree from Management University of Africa in partnership with UNISA. He is a member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (MIEK) and the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (MIEEE).
KETRACO’s Board of Directors has appointed FCPA Fernandes Barasa who is the Company’s Chief Manager Financial Services to hold the MD position. Mr. Barasa holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and an MBA in Finance from Kenyatta University. He is also the National Chairman, Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), lead Auditor and Certified Public Accountant of Kenya. Mr. Barasa has a wealth of experience in Public Finance Management, Risk Management, and Corporate Governance amongst others.
Mr. Barasa has previously worked for Kenya Tea Development Authority (KTDA) as the Treasury Manager and Later head of Factory’s Accounts. He has also held senior management positions at East Africa Reinsurance and Kenya Airways.
KETRACO is currently constructing a total of about 3,256Km of transmission line with the major projects being the 400kV Mombasa- Nairobi Line, 220kV Rabai- Malindi- Garsen- Lamu line, 220kV Olkaria- Suswa amongst others. The Company is also constructing lines to connect the Region and they include the 500kV Ethiopia- Kenya Line, 220kV Lessos- Tororo and the 400kvv Kenya Tanzania Line. These lines will facilitate electricity evacuation from generating stations, reinforce the grid network for increased capacity, reliability and provide redundancy.
Another major project for the Company is Suswa Substation. This is the biggest substation in the country and is the connection point for the 500kV Ethiopia Kenya Project and the 400kV Isinya- Suswa transmission line. The reach of this line will later expand to as far as Tanzania and Zambia through the Kenya- Tanzania line.
